The mosquitoes that make a Sarasota yard unusable are mostly container breeders. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus do not need a pond or a ditch. They breed in whatever holds water for about a week, which in practice means bromeliads, plant saucers, clogged gutters, tarp folds, bird baths and the tray under an air conditioning unit.
That changes the whole approach. Treating a yard as though mosquitoes come from somewhere else, and simply spraying the open lawn, misses both halves of the problem. They rest during the day in shaded, humid harbourage such as dense shrubs, ground cover and the underside of foliage, and they breed within a very short flight of where you are being bitten.
Both of those species are day-biting, which is why an evening-focused approach and a citronella candle do so little. The useful work is treating the harbourage where they sit out the day and removing the water they are using.

Container breeders develop from egg to adult in about a week in Florida heat, and they rarely travel far. Most of what is biting you was produced within a short flight of where you are standing.
The Yard Becomes Unusable
This is the practical cost and the one people actually feel. A lanai, a pool deck or a garden that cannot be used between April and October is a meaningful part of a Florida house simply written off for half the year.

Aedes aegypti is the vector for dengue and chikungunya, and Florida has recorded locally acquired dengue cases in recent years. West Nile virus is also present in the state. The risk to any individual is low, but it is not theoretical and it is worth reducing.
